Entrusted as the District’s seven member governing board, Trustees are chosen at an annual school election held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November each year. All positions are elected on a rotating four year term, and no more than two vacancies occur at the same time, except when a seat is vacated mid-term and must be temporarily filled until the next regularly scheduled election.

All community members are encouraged to participate. To become a candidate a nominating petition must be filed with the Livingston County Clerk. Please call the County Clerk for more information on filing and petition requirements at 517/546-0500.

The current School Board is comprised of individuals with a commitment to their community. Visible and active within the District, Board members regularly participate in committee meetings and school activities.

The School Board is responsible for developing and adopting educational policies. These policies provide guidance to the Superintendent and the staff as they implement educational programs and services for all residents of the Brighton School District.

Board meetings are generally scheduled twice a month; the second and fourth Monday at 7 PM in the Board Room at BECC, 125 S. Church Street. All meetings are open to the public. However, closed sessions may be held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act of the State of Michigan. The Board of Education meets in public for the purpose of conducting the school district’s business and is not to be considered a public community meeting. Time is provided during each meeting for anyone to address the Board. Audience members will be recognized during “Call to the Public.” The Chair requests that speakers identify themselves before addressing the Board.

The meetings are held to establish or amend school policies and act on the Superintendent’s recommendations on a variety of school matters. Although any matter relating to the operation of the schools may come before the Board, most matters are handled routinely through regular administrative channels.

Prior to each meeting an agenda is posted on the district’s web site and may also be obtained from the Superintendent’s office on the Friday before the Monday meeting.
